When I was sick as a child, my mother would bring me a bowl of hot chicken soup served on a black enamel tole tray. Since then, such vintage trays from the 40's have always brought back fond memories. This is an easy project, even for the less nimble fingered, with very pleasing results. For the floral design, look for small flower groupings in larger rub-on transfer or decal sets. A small section can also be cut from a larger set. An alternative is a grouping of floral fingernail decals. I used flowers from a transfer set by Royal & Langnickel Brush Mfg. called "Angel & Teddy" (#LAN-241). You can also acquire blank decal paper from model railroad stores or online supply sites. Following the directions on the decal paper, you can print graphics of your choice using your computer and a color printer. 1. Gently sand any rough edges from the tray kit, and then glue the rim/handles to the base, as directed. Use the tip of a toothpick to apply the glue sparingly, so you do not get much beading. With a moist cloth, wipe away extra glue. Allow the glue to dry. 2. Paint the entire tray with the black acrylic paint. Allow the paint to dry completely before proceeding to the next step.
3. Center your decal or rub-on, on the center of the painted tray, and apply per the instructions. Allow the design to dry, if applicable. 4. Using the toothpick, or a very fine tip paintbrush, paint the rim of the tray in gold, as shown in the photo. I like to practice first on paper, till I am comfortable with my control of paint and painting tool. 5. If desired, you can also add a gold trim design around the sides of your floral design. See photo for pattern. 6. Allow your gold paint to completely dry. 7. Finally, to get the tray an enamel look, and also hide
the edges of your decal or rub-on, coat your tray with gloss Modge-Podge.
